It starts with a series of seemingly random notes. As the piece progresses, it almost begins to draw a line from which one can infer a tune, but not quite. There are huge leaps, several octave or greater jumps, growling down to G below the staff with quick arpegios up to C above the staff. The second section is packed with repeating runs, repeating patterns, scales, and lots and lots of notes thrown in between. I don't remember a thing about the third section except that it begins much like the first. Larry Jones is a gifted player. A student of the late Richard Steff of the University of Memphis, he performs in and around the central Arkansas area.
He is one of those 'quietly competent' players. Playing and rehearsing with him is unsettling because he is so good. He just never misses notes, no matter how clumbsy the fingering. Larry's trumpet is an old Bach of some sort. Should anyone want to know, I can find out the particulars and post it here. He played on a Bach 1B mouthpiece.
His sound was fat and full. Yet, he soared into the upper register with ease, unencumbered by the mouthpiece's relatively large volume.
By any measure, Vizzutti's Cascades is a difficult piece. Larry performed it with confidence, dexterity, and wonderful trumpet technique. It was a real pleasure to hear. _________________ aka Benge Loyalist Benge Bb, 5x, ml #8162 Benge C, 2x+, mlp #7481 Benge D/Eb, ml #6579 Benge Flug, ml #17xxx Stomvi piccolo, m15, #901885 Boston 3-Star 1 NE Plus Ultra LP #22019 Martin Committee #151322 Bach Strad (NY) 7-10-62, #2003 cdaigle Veteran Member Joined: 05 Nov 2004 Posts: 352 Location: Tempe, AZ Posted: Wed Feb 02, 2005 1:04 pm Post subject: Cascades is definitely a fun piece. We had a freshman (I graduated from the UA) last year that played the hell out of it, as good as anyone Ive heard. Larry really is a great player. I was in the finals with him for the Arkansas Symphony job back in 02. Where in Arkansas are you? I lived in Fayetteville for about 5 years, a really great town. I went to study with Wiff Rudd. What would you have done for a 'day job' if you had earned the 2nd chair trumpet with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra? It isn't a full-time position.
Did Dick Jorgensen conduct the auditions? He's a friend of mine. I lived for 2 years in Jonesboro with my parents recently. However, I was unemployed and did not want to ask them to foot the bill for lessons with Dick. Now, that is an opportunity lost, but I simply had no money at that time. Are you currently playing?
