This thread has been created to help other AV users, particularly those people who own Pioneer plasma screens. It is hoped that this could be used to help others especially for those people who do not feel comfortable going to court. To set the scene, I recently purchased a Pioneer KRP-500a second hand off another AVForum member. When setup at home, I realised there was a problem with the screen, being non uniform especially with blacks and bright coloured sequences, with the problem potentially arising from viewing 2.35:1 aspect ratio configurations (i.e. A black bar at the top and bottom of the page).

The 5 year Pioneer warranty has been transferred and tested against Pioneer and it has resulted in Pioneer saying that the KRP-500a cannot be used with video content with black bars for continual viewing - it can only be used for 'normal' viewing. 'Normal' and the period it would take to realise a fault condition has yet to be disclosed by Pioneer, even when pressed for an answer. For pictures of the fault and greater detail, please see the dispute at: The way I see it is that the seller has used the screen for watching TV.

The TV has been ISF calibrated by Gordon Fraser and I have spoken to him about this and he has said that this shouldn't have happened (he's not seen this problem since the 3rd generation and certainly wasn't present back in November 2009). Many broadcasts on Freeview and SKY are in 2.35:1, not forgetting Most Blu-rays and many DVDs being in this cinema format. Pioneer cannot say that you can only watch a certain amount of video material in 2.35:1 aspect ratio as they would not be able to sell it labeled as a TV. I am actually a Chartered Electronics Engineer so realise that Pioneer could have done something about the issue when designing the screen by using an inverse matrix, applying: a) A combination of post processing/voltage increase making the image a higher contrast on the unused areas for a specified amount of time equal to the time used with non 16:9 black bar video content (this could even be done over night) or b) Allowing the TV to use grey bars instead of black so allowing to let the user choose whether to take the risk. Limiting 2.35:1 and other black bar ratio content to only using grey bars may have limited sales somewhat.
