Darklords Rising used to run fine on my Win10 computer with the -wincursor switch. But my copy of Win10 got messed up and I had to reinstall. And now DR won't run anymore. Ever since its release it has been one of my favorite games. I tried the VM Virtualbox option but Win 2000 won't even start up so that doesn't work for me. I tried copying the game from an old hard disk but that doesn't work either.
I really would like to be abloe to run DR on my PC. On my wife's laptop with Win10 it runs perfectly so it can be doene somehow. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you do not mind buying the game (again for most of us) go to this guy's ebay store: His name is Chris. An old school gamer and some sort of technical wizard. He has hundreds of games available (all of which come with the original brand new CDs or floppies for legal reasons) and they all come with a special CD he created with a special set-up/installation program for the game in question.
Among these are Warlords III: RoH. This prompted me to ask him if he also had Darklords Rising. I reminded him that DLR was notoriously difficult to get working in modern Windows systems and he told me directly that he has BOTH versions and would send me the DLR version if I ordered. At the time DLR was either not listed itself (but RoH was) or I missed it somehow while perusing his games. I myself have bought three games from him and every one has worked flawlessly These included the notorious Disciples of Steel and Wizardry Gold (which at the time even the gog.com version did not work well on modern Windows). Of course you may not be keen on paying for W3:DLR again but even so this means that there IS a way to do this which Chris figured out and others probably can too.
He does not use any virtual machine programs I am aware of. His games work by simply placing his special CD into your drive and double clicking the install/set-up file. After that you can play the game from your HD without need of any CD. • • • OFFLINE • Fresh Boarder • • Posts: 9 • Karma: 0 •.
SkeleTony, This is very interesting. His special CD is clearly a way to allow 16 bit installers to work on Win 7 and later machines. Insectonator zombie mode full screen. I imagine he just has a custom virtual installer that runs the 16 bit installer. But I don't see how the games themselves can be running natively in Win7 and later machines. A lot of them access the hardware directly for video and sound (hence the need for -wincursor on XP machines for DLR).
So if he's not using a virtual machine then he's customizing the hardware calls by intercepting them in some manner (which is essentially what a virtual machine does). Does he have a website to check out his products? KGB • • • OFFLINE • Administrator • • Posts: 402 • Karma: 21 •.
Baaf, Windows 10 recently underwent some security updates after the recent virus outbreaks. It's very possible those updates broke DLR and older games from running. It's also possible it's related to the version of Windows 10 you and your wife run (home, professional etc). We'd need to know a lot more about the version you had that worked, your current one and your wife's one. Questpond .net videos.

My guess is the reason copying from an old HD didn't work is because a new security update for Win10 is breaking DLR. You'll likely have to enable a setting or some compatibility mode somewhere (I don't have Win 10 so hard for me to help you) What problems did you encounter with the Win2000 VM?
